MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn. – Bi-County Solid Waste Management worked with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) to host three Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Events in 2024. The first HHW event will be held on Saturday, March 16, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Veterans Plaza, at 350 Pageant Lane. The second HHW event will be held on May 18, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Stewart County and the third HHW event will be held on September 28, at Veterans Plaza from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

HHW events are the perfect opportunity to properly dispose of unwanted or spent household products that can catch fire easily (flammable), eat away at or irritate living tissue (corrosive), react violently with water or other chemicals (reactive), or be poisonous to humans and animals (toxic), at no cost to Tennessee residents. During HHW collection events, up to 100 pounds of items such as household cleaners; automotive products; home, lawn, and garden products; home maintenance products; and miscellaneous items like old computers, batteries, pool chemicals, photo processing chemicals, medicines and drugs, aerosols and compressed gas are accepted. (view EPA list of common household items containing potentially hazardous ingredients). No dioxins or ammunition are allowed. 

Additionally, very small-quantity generators are now eligible to participate in the mobile HHW/VSQG collection events by appointment only. To request a price quote and schedule an appointment, please contact Clean Harbors Environmental Services at 615-643-3170 with a waste inventory.

Montgomery County, TN – David Smith was selected as the new Veterans Treatment Court (VTC) Director. Smith is a 22-year Army veteran who retired as a Sergeant First Class.

Smith earned his Master of Science in Social Work with a focus on trauma treatment from the University of Tennessee in 2020 and his Bachelor of Science in Social Work from Austin Peay State University in 2015.

“I am grateful to be back at the VTC supporting our soldiers and veterans in this leadership position. I understand many of the challenges faced by our soldiers and veterans and see it as a gift to be able to serve them and our community in this capacity. I know how meaningful this program is and will work to uphold the current standards of excellence,” said Smith.

Smith worked in the VTC as an administrative assistant/case manager from 2015 to 2019, when he resigned to pursue his graduate degree full-time and completed hours toward becoming a licensed clinical social worker.

“We are thrilled David chose to return to Montgomery County Government where he can put his experience and new credentials into serving our military veterans and active duty personnel. Working to assist our military friends helps our entire community. That’s why having the right fit for this role is important,” said Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden.

He has been married to his wife Shawana, an Army veteran, for 34 years. Smith stated that his goal was always to come back and serve VTC in some capacity. Smith replaces Edward Moss who was selected for the position of Youth Services Court Administrator in late December 2023.

The Montgomery County Veterans Treatment Court serves those who willingly sacrificed for our country and find themselves involved in the criminal justice system. VTC provides needed treatment and services under judicial supervision to restore veteran to their honored status within our community. Montgomery County Government offices will be closed Monday, Feb. 19, in observance of the President’s Day federal holiday. All Montgomery County offices will resume services on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Montgomery County, TN – Elizabeth Black who currently serves as the Administrator of Elections, has been appointed as the County’s new purchasing director.

"Elizabeth has an excellent reputation for integrity, planning, and project management. We are excited to move forward and work with her as she leads the purchasing department," said County Mayor Wes Golden.

Black holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management from Austin Peay State University and a Master of Business Administration from Murray State University. She has been working in county government since 2007 when she began working as the public information officer. She transitioned to the administrator of elections position in March 2017.

“I am very excited to lead the purchasing department and thrilled that I get to continue my career with Montgomery County Government. I look forward to working directly with county departments and continuing to serve the residents of Montgomery County in this new capacity,” said Black.

Black will oversee the activities and operations of the purchasing department. She will be responsible for the purchase and procurement of materials, supplies and equipment for Montgomery County Government. This includes developing bid documents for all biddable items; distributing bid documents to vendors; evaluating incoming bids; making purchase and procurement recommendations; and supervising the operations of the department.

Black assumes her new role on March 26, following the certification of the County Presidential Preference and County Primary election on March 5.

Mayor Wes Golden Challenges Fort Campbell’s Major General Brett Sylvia

Montgomery County, TN — The public is invited to join the fun at the Mayor versus the General Broomball game on Tuesday, Feb. 13. Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden challenged Fort Campbell’s Major General Brett Sylvia to a goodwill game in the Ford Ice Center the F&M Bank Arena, making this the fourth Mayor versus General Broomball Game in Montgomery County.

Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. and the opening ceremony begins at 6:15 p.m. The County Highway Department and the City Street Department play the first game at 6:30 p.m., the Mayor vs. the General game is set to start at 7:15 p.m., and the final game will be between Clarksville Gas & Water and Clarksville Fire Rescue will play at 8 p.m.

Emcees for this year’s event will be former County Mayor Jim Durrett and local radio show host Joe Padula. Concessions will be open at the arena and downtown restaurants will be open before and during the event. 

“Major General Sylvia heard about previous games and reached out to me about reviving the fun. Of course, I was all about making it happen! The match is a great opportunity to build lasting relationships and cheer on our local heroes from Fort Campbell. It will be a good time for everyone and we aim to reclaim that trophy,” said Mayor Golden.

“I appreciate the invitation from Mayor Golden to bring back the broomball tradition. It is always good when we can stay connected with the community. Our soldiers and families fight to serve at Fort Campbell and events like this continue to strengthen Fort Campbell’s connection to Montgomery County.  We’ve been practicing and plan to remain the champions in 2024!” said Maj. Gen. Sylvia, commanding general, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).  

The broomball games were played for three consecutive years from 2018 through 2020 at the Downtown Commons seasonal outdoor ice rink. Games in the following years were canceled due to COVID-19, weather, and lack of an available ice rink. Fort Campbell was the last to take the trophy home in 2020. 

The event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome and can be given to local United Way representatives who will be set up at the arena. The proceeds will go toward tornado relief efforts in our community.
